Healthy Weight And You

Body mass index (BMI) is one approach to tell whether you are solid, overweight, or fat. It measures your weight in relation to your height.BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is in the healthy category. A person with a BMW of 25 to 29.9 is considered to be overweight, and anyone with 30 or more BMI is considered obesity. Another way to find out more about weight and obesity problems is by measuring your waist. If you are a woman and your waist is more than 35 inches, or if you are a man and your waist is more than 40 inches, then your risk of disease can be high.

Why do people become overweight?

You eat more calories than your body uses or "burn off" and drink, your body can store extra energy, which can increase weight. Many factors can play a role in weight gain.

Overweight and obesity run in families. Research shows that genes will play a task in fleshiness. Families share eating habits that can affect how, when, and what they eat.

Certain medicines such as steroids (medicines used to reduce inflammation) and some medicines for depression and other mental disorders can cause weight gain. Ask about the side effects of any medicine you take from your health care provider or pharmacist.

Many people eat when they are not hungry, sad, angry or stressed.
Although you may not be able to control all the factors that lead to more weight, making small changes in the habits of your eating and physical activity can improve your health.

Paying attention to what, when, how often and how much you eat can be the first step to help you eat better.
